Front doors made of aluminium, wood or plastic
Aluminium entrance doors - elegant, robust, versatile
Entrance doors made of aluminium are robust and optimally thermally insulated thanks to thermally separated multi-chamber profiles. However, aluminium also offers great scope for design, as doors and frames can be painted, powder-coated or anodised in individual colours. Aluminium entrance doors are also sustainable, as the material can be easily recycled without any loss of quality.
Front doors made of wood and with wood decors
Alongside aluminium, wood is one of the most widely used materials for entrance doors and has comparable thermal insulation and security properties. However, because they are made of a natural building material, wooden doors are particularly sensitive, so protective coatings are usually unavoidable. Both aluminium and plastic doors are available with wood decor foils. Wood decors are confusingly similar in appearance and feel to real wood, but are much easier to care for.
Inexpensive and easy to maintain - plastic entrance doors
Plastic entrance doors are usually made of white, easy-care and easily recyclable PVC. They have good thermal insulation properties thanks to insulation-filled cavities. In addition, they are weatherproof and light-resistant, so that - unlike wooden doors - they do not require any protective coating. Entrance doors made of plastic are available in all imaginable colours and decorative foils.
Essential for front doors: accessibility and thermal insulation
Without door thresholds - barrier-free entrance doors
Level entrances without thresholds and barrier-free entrance doors facilitate access to residential buildings. If front doors are to be "barrier-free" according to DIN 18040 (Part 2), they must meet certain requirements: For example, thresholds are only permitted in exceptional cases and only up to a maximum height of two centimetres.
Barrier-free front door thresholds with magnetic seal
Entrance doors without any thresholds require a magnetic seal. This consists of a magnet firmly integrated into the door and a movable magnetic floor rail. When the front door is closed, the floor rail lifts and the floor joint closes. Additional seals prevent draughts and heat loss and thus improve the thermal insulation of the door.
Thermal insulation - the heat transfer coefficient
The Ud value (d=door) designates the heat transfer coefficient for evaluating the thermal insulation quality of a front door. The smaller the value, the better the thermal insulation. According to the Building Energy Act (GEG), new entrance doors must have a Ud value of at least 1.8 W/(m²K). Thick doors with high-quality thermal insulation achieve values of up to 0.7 W/(m²K).

Security and burglary protection
Securing entrance doors: Security locks & Co.
There are many ways to effectively secure entrance doors: security locks, crossbar locks, anti-lift devices for entrance door hinges, etc. Even more burglary protection is offered by a combination of mechanical security, camera surveillance and alarm systems. The advice centres of the criminal investigation department are also available to answer questions about individually sensible burglary protection and the seven resistance classes for burglar-resistant entrance doors.
Resistance classes RC 1N, RC 2N and RC 2-6 for front doors
The longer front doors withstand a burglary attempt (e.g. in the glass field or at the front door hinge), the higher their RC (Resistance Class) and thus the burglary protection. RC 1N and RC 2N offer basic burglary protection against burglary attempts with simple lever tools and/or physical force. The police consider entrance doors with RC 2 or higher to be "unreservedly recommendable".
High burglary protection with RC 3
If there is a higher need for security or if valuable objects are to be secured, resistance class RC 3 is recommended for entrance doors. Doors in this class must withstand burglary attempts with professional tools for at least five minutes. RC 4 to RC 6 are rarely used in residential environments, as burglaries here are only successful with heavy equipment and a lot of time.
Smart entrance doors in the smart home
The role of the front door in the smart home concept
In the age of digital networking, smart home solutions have long been a matter of course for front doors in residential buildings. Instead of a conventional key, smart entrance doors usually use apps, finger scanners and code buttons - usually in combination with an automatic lock and electric motor.
Conveniently open front doors via app
Smart home apps offer the possibility to control front doors with a smartphone or tablet. For example, doors can be unlocked remotely so that baby carriers or shopping bags no longer have to be put down to get into the house. It is just as easy to use an app to check the current status in the office or on the garden lounger or to open the front door for guests.
Finger scanner and code button
Finger scanners are installed in the door leaf, in the door frame or in the push handle of the smart entrance door. They are hardly noticeable there, are easy to operate and can be configured without additional programming devices. Code buttons are either also integrated in the push handle or can be found on the door frame or on fixed side panels next to the front door.

Equipment details for premium entrance doors
What distinguishes premium entrance doors?
High-quality entrance doors are usually made of slim aluminium profiles that create aesthetically elegant entrance areas. However, the features of premium doors also include accessibility, high burglary protection, excellent thermal insulation and stainless steel handles with integrated smart home solutions, such as finger scanners or code buttons.
The role of the right light at the entrance door
Good lighting at the front door ensures optimum visibility and safe use of the entrance to the house. It deters burglars - for example when they activate motion detectors. The right light also creates a cosy atmosphere and individual aesthetics. Energy-saving, dimmable LEDs available in many light colours should always be the light source of choice.
Front doors with LED lighting
In addition to the necessary basic lighting, for example by wall and ceiling luminaires, slim LED strips, possibly illuminated in colour, can also be used to set the scene for side handrails and canopies. Design accents are also possible with front doors whose stainless steel handles are equipped with indirect LED lighting.
